40% of the QS university rankings are based on Academic reputation, derived from a QS academic survey sent out to people in the higher education space. 20% is based on faculty/student ratio and 20% on citations per faculty. Altogether, these 3 factors constitute 80% of the ranking of universities, and I believe in these 3 areas, Chinese universities are either understated or have significant growth potential. Regarding academic reputation, as China is perceived as a greater industrial/academic power, I believe reputation will potential increase. Regarding faculty/student ratio, I believe Chinese universities have incredibly low ratios (1:80, etc) when compared to many other universities, which could depress the rankings in past years, and also offers potential where Chinese universities could improve (this link is fairly tenuous). Finally, I believe citations per faculty will increase as China develops and places greater emphasis on research.
